PHOENIX OYSTER GRAIN SPAWN AND DOWELS

The Phoenix Oyster mushroom is a staple of the mushroom growing world. Easy to cultivate, prolific cropper, and delicious in a wide range of cuisines, you really can't go wrong!

Our unique strain, which is native to New Zealand, has been selected from many for its great attributes and ease of cultivation.

This mushroom has a wonderful delicate yet savoury flavour. It is not 'musty' like a button mushroom. The flavours are clean, slightly nutty and sweet. They are delicious fried up on their own, or added to whatever kind of dish you like, from a stir fry or hot pot to pizzas, pasta, or anywhere you use mushrooms really.

This mushroom can be grown on straw or woodchips in bags or buckets, or on sawdust blocks. Being a native strain of mushroom, it's well adapted to New Zealand conditions and can be grown at any time of the year without additional heating. Growth is slower in cold weather, but the quality and flavour of cold grown mushrooms is excellent! Check out our grow guides for more information about growing them.

DOWELS:

Fully colonised, high quality dowel plugs of the delicious and easy to grow Phoenix Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus pulmonarius). These dowels are perfect for inoculating fresh cut logs of deciduous trees.

Simply drill some holes slightly deeper and slightly wider than the dowels, spaced about 15cm apart all around the log, tap them in with a hammer and seal the holes with melted wax. A log generally requires 15-50 dowels, depending on its size.

Logs take a year or so to begin fruiting, but after that, they will continue to produce several crops of mushrooms per year (when weather conditions are right) for up to five or six years. They are generally very low maintenance. A humid, shady corner of the garden is perfect for them.

Dowels are 8mm wide so a 8.5mm to 9mm drill bit is ideal for drilling the holes for them. Comes with instructions or check out our tips and advice page for more info.
